The Congregation of Sisters of the Destitute (S.D.) was founded by Rev. Fr. Varghese Payyappilly, in 1927, at Chunangamvely in Kerala. Srs. Josephina, Gertrude, Cicily and Sr. Kochuthresia were the co-founders.
A voice, urged from the heart of the founder, "Whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me" (Mt. 25:40). He was very much interested to share the compassionate lőve of Christ with the poor and the destitute, which was a rule of his life. Thus, inspired by this compassionate lőve, the congregation was founded to uplift the poor and the destitute. After two years of foundation, the Almighty has called Fr. Varghese Payyappilly for his eternal reward. Next 40 years, Msgr. George Valliarumpeth was the director. The congregation flourished intő different areas under the guidance of the director and the co-founders of the Congregation.
During the time of Msgr. George Valliarumpeth, the Congregation started to spread her mission in various parts of India and outside, as well. The first mission station was started in Delhi in the year 1958. In 1979, somé sisters were sent to the eparchy of Satna to share the compassionate lőve of Christ among the poor and the sick. The Congregation was divided intő three provinces in 1985, and Satna mission came under St. Vincent province. At present there are 1289 professed sisters and 179 communities. The main fields of apostolate are, Home for the Aged Destitute, Terminal Care Centers for Cancer and Aids Patients, Home for the Physically and Mentally Handi-capped Children, hospitals, schoots, community dcvelopment centers, balavadies, etc. Now our sisters arc working in "1 Xrchdioceses and 33 dioceses in India and abroad. Our prescnt Superior General is Mother Bastin S.D.
In 1995 Satna mission came under the Pushpadham region of St. Vinccnt Provincc Kothamangalam. There are 14 houses under this region. In the diocese of Satna there arc four houses at prescnt. They are: S.D. Convent and S.D. Formation House, at Pateri; Sacred Heart Convent School, at Khajuraho, and Asha Bhavan for the physically handicapped children at Panna. The Mottó of our Gongregation is: "The compassionate lőve of Christ urges us." |
